Replacing the System Board
Removing the System Board: Small Form-Factor, Small Desktop, Small Mini-Tower Computers
Shut down the computer through the Start menu.
Ensure that your computer and attached devices are turned off. If your computer and
attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your computer, turn
them off now.
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug it from the network wall jack.
Disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer.
Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets, and then
press the power button to ground the system board.
Remove the computer stand, if it is attached.
CAUTION: To guard against electrical shock, always unplug your computer from the electrical outlet before opening the cover.
Open the computer cover.
NOTICE: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate any static electricity that could harm internal components.
Remove any components that restrict access to the system board.
Disconnect all cables from the system board.
Before you remove the existing system board assembly, visually examine the existing
system board to determine the chassis configuration:
If a green tab is present on the front of the system board, your computer uses a metal tray
to attach the system board to the chassis.
NOTE: If your original system board is attached to a metal tray, you will transfer the replacement board to the metal tray before you install the new board. See step 1 in the next procedure.
If a green tab is not present on the front of the system board, your computer uses a
mounting plate to attach the system board to the chassis.
Remove the system board:
If your system board is mounted to the chassis using a metal tray, remove the tray and
the board as one piece:
Pull up on the tab and slide the system board assembly toward the front of the computer, and then lift the board away.
If your system board is mounted to the chassis using a mounting plate, remove the
system board and mounting plate as one piece:
Remove the retention screw at the front of the computer.
Slide the system board assembly toward the front of the computer, detaching it from the hooks on the floor of the chassis, and then lift the board away.

Remove any components that restrict access to the system board (CD/DVD drive(s), floppy
drive, hard drive, I/O panel).
Remove the heat sink assembly and processor.
Disconnect all cables from the system board.
Remove the 10 screws from the system board (see illustrations below for screw locations).
Slide the system board assembly toward the front of the computer, and then lift the board up
and away.

Place the system board assembly that you just removed next to the replacement system board
to ensure it is identical.
Replacing the System Board: Small Form-Factor, Small Desktop, and Small Mini-Tower Computers
If your original system board uses a mounting plate rather than a tray to attach to the chassis,
replace the existing system board with the replacement system board:
Slide the system board assembly toward the back of the computer, attaching it to the
hooks on the floor of the chassis.
Replace the retention screw at the front of the computer.

If your original system board uses a metal tray rather than a mounting plate to attach to the
chassis:
Detach the system board from the metal tray:
Remove the screw that secures the original board to the metal tray.
Remove the four mounting screws from the heat-sink retention base, and then remove the system board by sliding the board back and detaching it from the hooks on the metal tray.
Detach the replacement system board from its mounting plate by removing the four
mounting screws from the heat-sink retention base. Set the mounting plate aside for later
installation on the old system board prior to shipping back to Dell.
Install the replacement system board onto the metal tray by sliding the replacement
system board forward to attach the board to the hooks on the metal tray. Install the
retention base using the four mounting screws, and then replace the screw at the front of
the system board.
Install the mounting plate on the original system board using the retention base and the
four mounting screws.
Transfer components from the existing system board to the replacement system board:
Remove the memory modules from the existing system board and install them on the
replacement board.
CAUTION: The processor package and heat-sink assembly can get hot. To avoid burns, ensure that the package and assembly have had sufficient time to cool before you touch them.
Remove the heat-sink assembly and processor from the existing system board and
transfer them to the replacement system board.
Configure the settings of the replacement system board.
Set the jumpers on the replacement system board so they are identical to the ones on the
existing board.
NOTE: Some components and connectors on the replacement system board may be in different locations than the corresponding connectors on the existing system board.
Orient the replacement board by aligning the notches on the bottom to the tabs on the
computer.
Replace the system board:
If your system board is attached to a metal tray, slide the system board assembly toward
the back of the computer until the board clicks into position.
If your chassis is attached to a mounting plate, slide the system board into position and
replace the retention screw.
Replace any components and cables that you removed from the system board.
Reconnect all cables to their connectors at the back of the computer.
Close the computer cover.
Attach the computer stand.
NOTICE: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network wall jack and then plug it into the computer.
Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and turn them on.
Replacing the System Board: Desktop and Mini-Tower Computers
Gently align the board into the chassis and slide it toward the back of the computer.
Replace the screws on the system board.
Replace any components and cables that you removed from the system board.
Reconnect all cables to their connectors at the back of the computer.
Close the computer cover.
NOTICE: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network wall jack and then plug it into the computer.
